Ongoing Clinician Development:  MST Staff continually grow their skills through formal development, so they are continually setting goals for themselves and working to acquire new skills and competencies. Receive regular training, professional development, supervision, and consultation activities designed to help you acquire extensive clinical skills within the MST treatment model.

No Medicaid Billing or Documentation:  The Court does not bill Medicaid for services, so MST clinicians at this site do not have to complete Medicaid documentation.

Stipend: MST Therapists are eligible to receive a $30 daily stipend to be paid monthly for after-hours crisis intervention that occurs beyond their 40 hours of full-time work. This equates to up to $10,500 a year not including 3 weeks of vacation. This stipend is contingent upon securing grant funding for this specific purpose on a yearly basis.

Job Summary

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) works to address the needs of youth ages 12-17 who engage in problematic and criminal behaviors, and, in some cases, substance abuse.  Close holistic collaboration is done with families, youth, their communities, and other key members of their ecology to implement MST.  MST Therapists empower families to address problematic behaviors and to help their youth make life-transforming changes.  Treatment progress is made through intensive interventions such as changing unhelpful family interactions, addressing youth’s problems with peers and in school, and increasing social support.  Extensive research has proven the effectiveness of MST.  For more information on Multisystemic Therapy, please watch this video: How Does MST Work? - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzMKp8604ZCmaaS5AuCiwyA 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conducts a thorough assessment of the client and family: gathers information on behaviors of concern and strengths in the family and their ecology to inform conceptualization of the problem behaviors and interactions within the family’s ecological context.  

Engages primary caregiver and other key participants in active change‑oriented treatment by identifying and overcoming barriers to engagement.

Implements a problem conceptualization, treatment planning, intervention implementation, outcome review, and strategy revision procedure using the MST Analytic Process.

Maintains clear and concise documentation of treatment efforts that promote peer and supervisory review and feedback, and that demonstrate adherence to the 9 MST Principles and the MST Analytic Process. 

Collaborates with all relevant systems and key participants within each system to ensure their buy-in and cooperation throughout MST treatment.

Provides clinical treatment to families using the MST treatment model and principles. Some principles include leveraging strengths and focusing on the positive, understanding sequences of behavior, and increasing mature behavior.

Participates in all MST weekly supervision and consultation activities, quarterly booster trainings (CEU eligible), as well as on-going clinician development meetings to enhance and develop the MST skill set.

Continuously works to engage the primary caregiver, family members, supports, and community agency staff (school, probation, child welfare) in change-oriented treatment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Has no direct supervisory responsibility for staff members.

Equipment Operated

Standard office equipment and office technology such as copy machines, personal computers and telephones.

Confidential Data

All court-related information regarding hearings, etc. that the employee may come in contact with by working in the facility.

Working Conditions

Potential exposure to hazardous situations that occur in the Court environment.  Must be able to tolerate exposure to evidence and testimony that may be disturbing, clients who may potentially be verbally or physically uncooperative, allergens, such as perfumes and dust. MST caseloads are small and capped at 5 to ensure adherence to the MST model. Schedule is flexible with some evenings and weekends required if based on need of family.

Usual Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, to speak clearly, and to hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Must be knowledgeable, or be willing to acquire knowledge in family systems theory and application, social ecological theory and application, behavioral therapies theory and application, cognitive‑behavioral therapy theory and application, pragmatic family therapies theory and application, child development research and its application in treatment, social skills assessment and intervention. Home visits required. 

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in a related subject area with the appropriate licensure listed below is required.

Prefer work experience in direct use of family therapies; individual therapy with children and adults using cognitive behavioral techniques; behavioral therapy targeting school behavior and academic performance; implementation of interventions within or between systems in the youth’s natural ecology that affect or influence the behavior of youth (i.e. family, peers, school, and neighborhood).

Licensure or Certification Requirements

Must possess an active Ohio LSW, LISW, LPC, LPCC, MFT, or IMFT license (or a scheduled date for your exam within the next 30 days) and a valid Ohio driver’s license. Candidates must maintain valid automobile insurance, with a clean driving record and ready access to a safe functioning automobile. Must complete the 5-day MST Training program within first 6 months of hire. Completes the 5 Day MST training to enhance understanding of the MST Analytic Process.
