Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Probation Officer has responsibilities for investigation of cases and/or supervision of cases.
Provides services for pre and post-adjudicated youth and their families in a fast-paced, stressful environment in an effort to reduce recidivism and to minimize involvement into the juvenile justice system.
Interviews, assesses, and counsels youth and families in their home, school and probation office. Meets and interviews youth in the Detention Center or elsewhere as appropriate to develop a comprehensive social history and to obtain other relevant information for court presentations, and/or for further service planning. Performs in an environment that is fluid, frequently making last minute schedule changes to accommodate clients and professionals.
Provides ongoing case management services to clients placed on probation including counseling, mediation, crisis intervention, monitoring behavior, developing treatment/service plans, re-evaluating treatment/service plans and modifying plans as needed. Uses creative thinking when traditional interventions are not successful.
Makes articulate, professional, measured oral presentations of cases in court hearings, possibly on a moment’s notice, to Judges and Magistrates and interprets court orders and makes necessary referrals to collateral agencies.
Prepares written reports that include case summaries, court reports, follow-up notes and other correspondence. Reports must be concise, thorough, accurate, and very well written. Completes statistical reports.
Confers with Supervisor to evaluate case priorities and participate in case consultations.
Participates on committees to resolve systems issues and provide probation services for special need populations such as gang members, sex offenders, and substance abusers.
Provides and actively participates in E.P.I.C.S. (Effective Practices in Community Supervision) with clients on a daily basis to reduce recidivism. Engages clients, teaches problem solving skills, and provides evidence-based interventions and assign homework directed towards successful outcomes for youth.
Uses analytical skills to develop interventions that address specific needs/ risks as identified by The Ohio Youth Assessment System.
Provides comprehensive case management services to youth/ families with mental health, substance abuse and behavior issues on a daily basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Has no direct supervisory responsibility for staff members.

Standard office equipment and office technology such as copy machines, personal computers and telephones.
Confidential Data
All court-related information regarding hearings, etc. that the employee may come in contact with by working in the facility and confidential information that employee comes into contact with while working with probation clients.
Working Conditions
This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls and inquiries simultaneously; and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.
Usual Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, to speak clearly, and to hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Must be willing to work in varied weather conditions and long periods of time in a vehicle.

Demonstrable knowledge of adolescent growth and development, human behavior, and family dynamics. Working knowledge of brokering community resources and an understanding of the juvenile justice system. Skills in interviewing, case assessment and individual counseling. Proven and effective verbal and written communication skills and abilities. Ability to effectively communicate new concepts (such as E.P.I.C.S.) to youth and families. Ability to make thorough, comprehensive oral presentations in court hearings and in team and committee meetings. Ability to effectively analyze case data and design interventions for youth/ families. Ability to make use of referrals. Exhibits sound, thorough decision making skills. Maintains confidentiality. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with clients, staff and the public. Makes use of supervision. Culturally competent. Ability to effectively manage stress. Provides crisis de-escalation. Works effectively with volatile clients. Problem solves and multi-tasks. Demonstrates professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills. Flexible in work hours to accommodate program needs including, but not limited to, case consultation on an emergency or as needed basis 7 days/week, 24 hours/day, in person or by telephone.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Education or a related area.
Prefer candidates with one year of work experience managing a Probation caseload, completion of a Probation internship at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division, or related experience.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and maintain valid automobile insurance, with a clean driving record and ready access to a safe functioning automobile.
