Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.

Maintains clean and sanitary conditions at the Detention Center.  Collects unwashed laundry and distributes clean laundry.

Cleans, dusts, scrubs, washes, mops, polishes and buffs Detention Center units, offices, corridors, restrooms, dispensary, and kitchen on a daily basis for sanitary and health purposes.

Strips, washes and waxes Detention Center unit floors, including floors in corridors, kitchen, restrooms and offices as needed and periodically during the year.

Replenishes cleaning supplies on a daily basis such as towels, soaps, and toilet paper in restrooms throughout the Detention Center.

Completes an inventory of storeroom supplies monthly and equipment throughout the Detention Center every six months.

Reads all labels on chemicals throughout the Detention Center and determines appropriate cleaning chemical use according to state law, prior to mixing and using, to avoid hazardous health conditions.

Performs special cleaning assignments on a weekly basis such as washing and cleaning screens and streamers in the kitchen area and shower areas in the living units.

In emergency situations, cleans spills, including disinfecting and sterilizing where required.

Prepares soiled laundry for transportation to outside laundry facility when needed.

Receives, washes, and dries resident clothing to meet needs.

Sorts and distributes clean laundry to Detention Center living units as required.

Distributes supplies to units and departments on a weekly basis and/or as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Has no direct supervisory responsibility for staff members.

Equipment Operated

Standard cleaning equipment used in an office and detention center, including and not limited to, power tools, cleaning solvents and chemicals.

Confidential Data

All court-related information regarding hearings, etc. that the employee may come in contact with by working in the facility.

Working Conditions

Potential exposure to hazardous situations that may occur in the court environment, including a tense and hostile atmosphere, contagious diseases, loss of bodily fluids, vulgar and obscene language, and emotionally charged situations.  Physical demands of the job include walking, standing, or bending while cleaning. Sometimes must move or lift heavy supplies and equipment. As a result, the work may be strenuous on the back, arms, and legs. Some tasks, such as cleaning restrooms and trash areas, can be dirty.  Some experience with power tools is required and cleaning solvents.  Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations.

Usual Physical Demands

While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently walks and stands.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  No lifting restrictions or light duty are permitted in this position.

Must pass a pre-employment physical exam and demonstrate the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 lbs. 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Knowledge of institutional cleaning where youths are housed. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, materials, and chemical products routinely used in institutional cleaning.  Please note that there are no lifting restrictions or light duty for this position. 

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

AND

Prefer experience in institutional cleaning or equivalent.

Licensure or Certification Requirements

None.
